File Viewer is a utility that allows you to view any file on your Mac. The program natively supports over 60 file types, can play common audio and video formats, and display many image, Web, and page layout file types. File Viewer also provides hexadecimal, text, and icon views to help you inspect the contents of each file.

With File Viewer, you can identify unknown file types and locate programs that open them. The software is linked to the FileInfo.com database, which contains thousands of file extension entries. Each file that is opened in File Viewer is matched to the FileInfo.com database, and File Viewer displays a list of matched file types.

Stuff StuffIt, the Unarchiver handles everything, and it's free.

The Unarchiver is designed to handle many more formats than Archive Utility, and to better fit in with the design of the Finder. It can also handle filenames in foreign character sets, created with non-English versions of other operating systems. Supported file formats include Zip, Tar-GZip, Tar-BZip2, Rar, 7-zip, LhA, StuffIt and many other more or less obscure formats. It is localized into Japanese, German, Spanish, French, Portugese and Russian.

Version 3.0:

  • The Archive Browser is now available. Find it on the Mac App Store!
  • Support for WinZip Zipx.
  • Support for extracting images and sounds from Flash SWF files.
  • Support for various Unix formats, such as ar and deb.
  • Support for more CD and DVD image formats, such as MDF, NRG and CDI.
  • Better support for Zip64 (large zip files) and extended attributes.
  • Better support for 7z (self-extracting files, and LZMA2).
  • Better support for some old formats, like LBR, StuffIt and DiskDoubler.
  • Lots of bugfixes.

Peep is a data extraction utility that lets you:

  • Open any file regardless of format
  • View each byte as data (decimal or hex notation) or as text
  • Try different text encodings to find the correct one or the best fit
  • Filter out the text from a proprietary format
  • Save a text file using the same or another encoding

Athough it looks like a hexeditor type programme, it’s not intended it to be an editor but rather to inspect, access or sort out encoding problems.

This is a very useful utility when programming or when wishing to extract information from a file that you can’t open otherwise.

Version 2:

  • Rewrite using Obj-C (hence beta)
  • Adds data / text modes (see Readme for details)
  • Adds ability to choose input text encoding and output text encoding
  • Adds ability to save the file
  • Adds ‘New from clipboard’

Mac OS X 10.4 or later

With Cloak, safety is just a click away. Here’s why:

  • No setup or configuration: it just works.
  • Automatically detects insecure networks and keeps you safe.
  • Rock-solid, industry standard encryption technologies.
